The Dogs of Divorce: The Journey out of a Dark Marriage by William Kenly is the kind of book that I would leave out on the coffee table for every visitor to my house to see and use as a conversation starter. I have read this book in one sitting, even though at first the subject matter made me doubt whether I would even be able to finish the book. Plenty of my friends have been divorced and it gets kind of depressing to listen to the horror stories of how nasty a divorce can be. I am pleasantly surprised by this book. Kenly made me laugh throughout the book, without falling into the trap of making fun of divorce or seeing divorce as a topic for slap stick comedy.
Kenly is able to walk the tightrope between showing the reader that divorce is all too often part of adult life and we need to accept it with all its sad episodes, but most importantly, Kenly then goes on to show that we can find happiness after divorce. Divorce is an episode in life, life does not stop with divorce and we need to learn to accept divorce as just that, an episode. Nothing to be embarrassed about and no need to feel guilty. Life goes on and life can be fun and you will learn to laugh again.
The author describes his divorce in a series of humorous chapters. He balances the humor of going through a divorce with clearly showing the effect a divorce has on families and friends. Thank goodness for the reader and much to the credit of the author, the stories clearly outweigh in the humor department. I could not help but laugh when reading how each spouse is trying to up the other in terms of alimony and child support. For several of my friends going through a divorce, child support was a never ending battle and it is no different for the author, but there is humor in the scenes when interesting descriptions can be used to squeeze a little bit more or less out of the partner. I could not help but think of some of the stories that one hears about how people file their taxes and the description they come up with to justify yet another deduction.
Especially touching were the descriptions of how the author first enters the dating scene. As a reader one can sense the awkwardness and the attempts to find the right person, but feeling ill at ease after so many years of marriage having to date AGAIN. Luckily for the author, he found a perfect companion and this comes clearly through the writings in this book.
This is a wonderful book that I would highly recommend for anyone going through a divorce. You will feel much better after having read the book. But even as someone who had never gone through a divorce, the book for me was just funny and entertaining. It was a lovely read that I could not put down, once I started it.
