As a person who thinks gender affects everything, I was delighted to find an anthology that discusses the intersection of gender and medicine. Those readers with a social science background will be able to understand the science discussed here. However, as brilliant as medical doctors are, they may not understand some of the cultural theory brought up here.
Men's studies guru, Dr. Michael Messner, has written that women are disproportionately interested in men's studies than most men. This anthology has about an equal mix of male and female contributors, thus corroborating Messner's assertion. Something unique about this book is that every chapter has a history lesson in it. This is not cultural studies that just concerns itself with the present or current media. It looks back and acts as a history of science information.
Some feminists have argued that "gynecology" should refer to women's studies rather than reproductive science. In this book on men's health matters, the first chapter are phallocentric, aka "penis-focused." The book starts with Viagra, moves to Cialis, then talks about semen. This buildup had value in that most men are concerned about "down there." Still, this type of privileging "Mr. Happy" may bother some readers.
The last chapters deal with subgroups of men. As writers move from analyzing "masculinity" to "masculinities," this was an important move. I appreciated reading about older men, black men, and veterans. Still, I would have liked there to be a chapter on gay men or transgendered men. Heterocentricity is brought up. Still, a specific chapter on these groups would have been beneficial.
Sperm are described as soldiers. "Iron" Mike Ditka advertises Viagra. The negative backlash based upon the horrors of the Tuskegee Experiment can still be felt. This book had much insightful information in it.
