Life in the House of Cards: Or Parenting a Child with Mental Illness Review

I will keep my review of this book brief and painless: In the middle of page 28 I closed it and went to my computer to order 3 additional copies. At that point of my reading I had thought of two colleagues that are going to have a feast reading the magnificent work Dr. Abramovich has done assembling all the information and touching stories included in LIFE IN THE HOUSE OF CARDS Or Parenting a Child with Mental Illness. I also want to keep a copy in my office.
I have no reservations to recommend this book to parents and mental health practitioners as well. It would be wonderful if this text becomes a Best Seller because that will translate in many parents and therapists been exposed to a truth that so many are afraid to even mention: we should perceive mental illness as serious health problem that can be as lethal as a cancer or heart disease. For those in doubt Dr. Abramovich reminds us of the Columbine and Virginia Tech massacres that, according with multiple press reports, were perpetrated by individuals with already diagnosed mental conditions but probably no receiving treatments. From another perspective the author makes clear that child psychiatry is science-based even though we don't have objective tests that could impact the course of treatment...we can show to a family a PET scan pinpointing the affected area but this development would not change our management of a disease diagnosed with a clinical interview.
To conclude, this book is easy to read and it is a nice indulgence to anybody interested in this field.
