Navigating the ADHD Treatment Maze for Teens and Preteens: Handbook for Parents Review

I never wrote a review on Amazon, but thought I really should share my view about this book. This book is a great guide for all parents with ADHD teens. My son was diagnosed last year after years of struggling with grades and getting into trouble in school. The psychiatrist gave him meds, and seemed to help after we tried several kinds, but he does not like all the side effects, lack of appetite, dry mouth, feeling groggy. His grades were a little better towards the end of last school year and he is less hyper and fidgety. But he is really resisting taking the pills. I Google other treatments, not sure as some of them seem too good to be true and some are really expensive, but I am really tempted to try them. My friend who also has a son with ADHD gave me this book and told me I absolutely should read. The book mentioned many options, explained what they are, and the good and bad with each option. The author had tried almost all the options she mentioned with her own daughter. I like that she explains how much time and money the options may take and the risks involved. So now I know what I can do and what to expect rather than relying on all these websites saying that their pills "cure" ADHD. I am going to order volume 2, which is supposely a less detailed version for teens, with comments from the author's daughter. Hopefully that would get my son to be more willing to try different options. I like the most about the book is that the author is looking ahead to when the kids turn 18. My son started high school, so college is only 4 years away. I cannot be there to nag him about taking his meds. I also do'nt want him to depend on meds the rest of his life. This book explains what the diet and supplements, brain exercise, and some other non conventional treatments do, with a lot of references to back up what the author was saying. I know how stressful and frustrating to have a kid with ADHD and how desperate things can get. I recommend this book to all the parents who have a teen with ADHD.
