Where was this book when I was training in mental health all those years ago? It is difficult to know where to begin in reviewing this book and at the same time avoid hyperbole. But, really, this book is magnificent. Each section is laid out with a different aspect of mental illness. Each mental illness is taken through step by step so the practitioner is able to make a diagnosis and subsequent treatment plan. Each section has different presentation and learning forms (pictures, hint boxes and others) that allows the reader as much depth as needed for first reading or prompts for revision reading.
This book is not just for medical practitioners but all allied mental health workers - nurses, OT's, social workers and psychologists. It contains a wealth of knowledge that is simply (not simplistic as many of the points are quite complex) vital to the mental health worker.
During Dr Stringers recent Australian tour I was lucky enough to be able to speak with her about her pychiatric practice and to hear first-hand her interaction with a patient. She is a true professional with an enormity of caring for those she comes in contact with and a passion for her profession and teaching. I hope this is not the first and last contribution that Dr Stringer will make to the corpus of psychiatric knowledge - we wait for the next.
